Create an admin account on Ghost
How to create or confirm a Ghost Owner or Administrator account, the level needed so Code injection can be used to add the Amabrik snippet to your site.
If you’ve asked Amabrik to install the snippet for you, we need someone on your side who can grant us access to the site. On Ghost that means an account with the Owner or Administrator role. Those are the only roles that can reach the setting where the snippet goes, so that’s the level of access we need.
This page covers two cases: you don’t have a Ghost site yet and need to create one, or you already have a site but need to confirm you (or the right person) hold an admin-level role. Once that’s sorted, the next step is giving Amabrik access.
What admin access is for here
Amabrik adds one small snippet to your site, and from then on every widget you turn on in your dashboard appears on your site. To add that snippet, we (or you) use a built-in Ghost feature called Code injection, found under Settings > Advanced > Code injection (the direct address is /ghost/#/settings/code-injection). It has two boxes, Site header and Site footer, and the snippet goes in one of them.
Only the Owner and users with the Administrator role can open site-wide Code injection. Editors, Authors, and Contributors can’t reach it. That’s why we ask for an admin-level account.
If you don’t have a Ghost site yet
The person who sets the site up becomes the Owner, which is the highest level of access. There’s one Owner per site, and that role can’t be deleted.
If you use Ghost(Pro), the official hosted service:
- Go to ghost.org and start the sign-up for Ghost(Pro).
- Sign up with your email and a password, then confirm your email address.
- Pick a site name and finish the setup steps. The account you signed up with becomes the Owner.
If you self-host Ghost, the first account created during install is the Owner. Once Ghost is installed, sign in at your own admin address, which is your site URL with /ghost/ on the end (for example https://yoursite.com/ghost/).
Ghost(Pro) usually starts you on a free trial before you pick a paid plan. The exact trial length and pricing can change, so check the current offer on the sign-up screen.
If you already have a site
You need either the Owner account or a user with the Administrator role. Here’s how to tell which you have:
- Sign in to your Ghost admin. On Ghost(Pro) that’s the link in your welcome email; if you self-host, it’s your site URL with
/ghost/added. - Open Settings, then under General find the Staff section (the direct address is
/ghost/#/settings/staff). - Find your name in the list and open your profile. Your role is shown there. If it’s Owner or Administrator, you have what’s needed. If it’s Editor, Author, or Contributor, you don’t.
If you’re not an Owner or Administrator, ask whoever owns the site to either raise your role to Administrator or handle the access step themselves. The Owner and any Administrator can change a user’s role from the same Staff area.
Ghost roles, and which can use Code injection
Ghost has five staff roles. Only the top two can reach site-wide Code injection:
- Owner: full access to everything, including billing and site settings. One per site, and it can’t be deleted. Can use Code injection.
- Administrator: can do everything an Editor and Author can, plus edit all site settings and manage every user. Can use Code injection.
- Editor: can write, edit, and publish posts, including the work of others, and can invite Contributors and Authors. Can’t reach site settings, so can’t use Code injection.
- Author: can write, edit, and publish their own posts. Can’t use Code injection.
- Contributor: the base role. Can create and edit their own drafts but can’t publish. Can’t use Code injection.
For setting Amabrik up, either Owner or Administrator works. Use whichever account is easiest for the person handling it.
FAQ
Do I have to be the Owner to let Amabrik in?
No. A user with the Administrator role can do everything we need. The Owner just needs to invite that person, or invite us directly. See giving Amabrik access.
Can an Administrator use Code injection, or only the Owner?
Both. Site-wide Code injection is open to the Owner and to any Administrator. That’s why we ask for an Administrator invite.
My role is Editor. Can I add the snippet?
No. Editors, Authors, and Contributors can’t open site-wide Code injection. Ask the Owner or an Administrator to raise your role, or to handle the access step.
I forgot which email owns the site.
Try signing in at your admin address (your site URL with /ghost/ on the end). If that fails, use the password reset link, or check the inbox that received your Ghost billing or setup emails, since that’s usually the Owner’s email.
What’s the next step once I have admin access?
Move on to giving Amabrik access to your site. That’s where you invite the email we give you so we can add the snippet.
