Create an admin account on BigCommerce
How to create a BigCommerce store owner account, or confirm admin access on an existing store, so the Amabrik snippet can be added to your store.
If you’ve asked Amabrik to install the snippet for you, we need someone on your side who can grant us access to the store. That means an account with admin rights on your BigCommerce store. The store owner has those rights by default, and the owner can give the right permissions to another user.
This page covers two cases: you don’t have a BigCommerce store yet and need to create one, or you already have a store but need to confirm you (or the right person) can reach the control panel. Once that’s sorted, the next step is giving Amabrik access.
What admin access is for here
Amabrik adds one small snippet to your store, and from then on every widget you turn on in your dashboard appears on your site. To add that snippet, we (or you) use Script Manager in the BigCommerce control panel, or edit the theme files. Both need admin rights. The store owner has full access, so the owner can do this directly or pass the right permissions to whoever handles it.
If you don’t have a BigCommerce store yet
The person who signs up becomes the store owner, which is the highest level of access on the store. The owner is the first user account created when the store is launched and the only role with full administrative privileges, including billing and account details.
- Go to bigcommerce.com and start the sign-up.
- Enter your email address.
- Fill in the short form: a store name, a password, your name, phone number, the size of your business, and the region your store should be hosted in.
- Submit the form. BigCommerce creates a trial store and sends you an email with your login details.
- Open the email and sign in. You’re now in the control panel as the store owner.
BigCommerce starts you on a free trial. A trial store isn’t visible to the public, so search engines won’t index it while you build, and it won’t go live until you make a storefront active under Channels. The exact trial length and pricing can change, so check the current offer on the sign-up screen.
You can reach your control panel at any time at your store’s admin URL (store-name.mybigcommerce.com/manage), or by signing in from the BigCommerce account dashboard.
If you already have a store
You need either the store owner account or a user account that has admin rights. Here’s how to tell which you have:
- Sign in to your BigCommerce control panel.
- Go to Settings in the left menu.
- Under the Account heading, open Users.
- Find your name in the list. If your role is Store Owner or Store Administrator, you have the access we need. If you have a custom role, check that it includes Store Design and the permission to use Script Manager.
If you’re not the owner and you don’t have those permissions, ask whoever owns the store to either grant them to you or handle the access step themselves. The owner can update any user’s permissions from the same Settings > Users page.
Owner vs user with admin
You don’t have to be the store owner to set Amabrik up. A user with the right permissions can do everything we need. The difference is scope:
- Store Owner: full access to everything, including billing, the plan, and installing apps. There’s one owner per store, and only the owner can install apps and move domains.
- User with admin permissions: can do the tasks they’ve been given access to. For installing Amabrik, the Store Design and Use Script Manager permissions are what matter.
For granting us access, either one works. Use whichever account is easiest for the person handling it.
FAQ
Do I have to be the store owner to let Amabrik in?
No. A user account with the Store Design and Use Script Manager permissions is enough. The owner just needs to grant those.
Can I change the store owner later?
Yes. The current owner can transfer ownership from the BigCommerce account settings. The store owner is the person financially responsible for the account, so this also moves billing responsibility.
I forgot which email owns the store.
Try signing in from the BigCommerce account dashboard. If that fails, use the password reset link, or check the inbox that received your BigCommerce billing emails, since that’s usually the owner’s email.
