Create an admin account on Big Cartel

How to create or confirm the Big Cartel account that owns your shop, so the theme code can be edited and the Amabrik snippet added. Big Cartel is one account per shop.

If you’ve asked Amabrik to install the snippet for you, we need someone on your side who can reach the shop’s code. On Big Cartel that’s the account that owns the shop. Adding the snippet means editing the theme’s Head code, which only the shop’s own login can open.

This page covers two cases: you don’t have a Big Cartel shop yet and need to create one, or you already have a shop but need to confirm you can sign in to the account that owns it. Once that’s sorted, the next step is giving Amabrik access.

One account per shop, no staff logins

This is the key thing to know up front. As of June 2026, a Big Cartel shop has a single account, the one tied to the email on file in your admin. Big Cartel doesn’t have staff logins, team members, or a way to invite a second person, so there’s no separate “admin” role to hand out. Whoever can sign in to the shop account is the admin.

Big Cartel’s own help is clear on this: the email address on the Account page of your admin is the only address they grant access to, and they’ll only help with access if you contact them from that email.

Because of that, granting Amabrik access works differently here than on platforms with collaborator invites. We cover the safe way to do it on the access page. First, make sure you can sign in to the shop account.

What this account is for here

Amabrik adds one small snippet to your shop, and from then on every widget you turn on in your dashboard appears on your store. To add that snippet, we (or you) edit the shop’s theme code under Shop settings > Shop designer > Code. Only the shop account can open that area, which is why we need its login.

Check your plan first

Adding a script tag needs a paid plan (Platinum or higher). The free Gold plan only allows CSS edits for styling, so there’s nowhere to paste the snippet. You can check or change your plan under Shop settings > Account in your Big Cartel admin. If you’re on Gold and want Amabrik on your store, upgrade before the install.

If you don’t have a Big Cartel shop yet

The person who signs up owns the shop. There’s one account, and it’s the one you’ll use for everything, including the install.

  1. Go to bigcartel.com and start opening a shop.
  2. Pick a plan. You can start on a free plan, but remember a paid plan (Platinum or higher) is required to add a script, so plan for that if you want Amabrik on the store.
  3. Sign up with your email and a password, or continue with Google.
  4. Read and accept the Merchant User Agreement, then finish the sign-up.
  5. Follow the prompts to name your shop, set its web address, and add your first product. You can change the design later, so don’t overthink it.

The email and password (or Google account) you signed up with is now the shop account. Keep those details safe, since they’re the only way in.

If you already have a shop

You need to be able to sign in to the account that owns it.

  1. Go to bigcartel.com and click to log in.
  2. Sign in with the shop’s email and password, or with the connected Google account.
  3. Once you’re in the admin, open Shop settings > Account and confirm the Email address shown there is one you control. That’s the shop’s owner email.

If you can’t sign in, use the password reset link on the login page. If that email inbox is gone or you’ve lost access to it, contact Big Cartel support from the closest email you have on record. They verify ownership through the email on file, so recovering access can take some back and forth on their side.

Owner email matters

The email on the Account page isn’t just a contact address. It’s how Big Cartel identifies the shop owner, and it’s the only address they’ll grant access through. Keep it current and keep access to that inbox. If you ever need to transfer the shop to someone else, Big Cartel asks you to contact them first so they can walk you through it.

Can I add a second user or a staff account for Amabrik?

No. Big Cartel shops have a single account, with no staff logins or collaborator invites. There’s no second account to create. See giving Amabrik access for the safe way to let us in.

Which plan do I need to add the snippet?

A paid plan, Platinum or higher. The free Gold plan only allows CSS edits, with no place for a script tag. Check your plan under Shop settings > Account.

I forgot which email owns the shop.

Try the password reset link on the Big Cartel login page. If that doesn’t help, check the inbox that received your Big Cartel billing emails, since that’s usually the owner’s email. As a last resort, contact Big Cartel support.

Do I have to be the owner to let Amabrik in?

On Big Cartel, yes, because there’s only the one account. Whoever can sign in to the shop is the person who can grant access.
